What is effective giving?
Effective giving is a philanthropic value system that prioritizes improving or saving the most lives per dollar donated.
Not all nonprofit organizations are created equal and it can be difficult to know which ones are actually making a difference in the world.
Research suggests that only 3% of donors do comparative research before giving to non-profit organizations. One for the World has taken all of the guesswork out of your philanthropic endeavors by presenting you with a list of organizations that are the most effective at improving and ultimately, saving lives all over the world.
GiveWell’s Evaluation Criteria
-
GiveWell attempts to estimate figures such as “cost per life saved” or “cost per total economic benefit to others” for each of the nonprofit organizations that they consider.
-
Nonprofit organizations must be open to GiveWell’s thorough and skeptical review of programs in addition to public reporting of review materials.
-
GiveWell seeks to evaluate organizations that have been studied rigorously and whose benefits can be reasonably applied to large populations.
-
Each organization must be able to demonstrate that they can scale up their service with access to additional funding.
